Frequently Asked Questions
Can you do portraits or pets ?
The face is a very intricate image to recreate, especially with the pyrography medium. I currently do not provide portrait renditions. In lieu of this, I do offer what I refer to as the Memorial plaque. This is typically a quote, and the image of the loved one (or pet) and usually name/dates. I print the image and it is glued to the basswood and covered with a piece of acrylic glass.
can you make adjustments to an image?
Of course ! The process I use to layout all of my designs before burning is by utilizing a pocket projector. This allows me to size the image, add or delete whatever elements I need. It also allows the flexibility to combine images.
What if i have my own box or piece of wood that i would like burned ?
I would need a few photos of the wood or item that you would like burned. Ideally, the wood needs to be unfinished (no stain or sealer). Most stains and sealers have an odor that is released when burning. If the finish can be sanded prior to burning, it will work. However, the trick is matching the stain or finish once complete. Currently, I only offer this service locally, near White House, TN. I can meet within a 30 mile radius.
Do you offer shipping ?
Most of my sales have been local through facebook/marketplace mainly, and word of mouth. I have not ventured into online sales as of yet. I will update the website when shipping becomes available.
do you offer color options with woodburning?
Most of the pieces that I have added color to have been pieces I have made to sell. I believe I have only sold one or two custom pieces with color. The addition of colors adds another medium and more supplies and therefore increases cost. I can add color upon request for an additional fee.
Can you do any state cutout ?
I have been able to do quite a few different state cutout shapes. The difficult part of some of the shapes is finding a piece of wood to accommodate the scaled size it requires. For instance, Tennessee being long a narrow, is a lot easier to transfer to a pine board with nominal widths of 6”, 8” or 10”. A more intricate shape like Texas or Alaska, would need a wider board in order to accomodate the larger scale.
Do you do other types of wood besides basswood ?
I have used several different types of wood. Basswood is the ideal type for pyrography. Being a softer wood, and more of a blank canvas as far as minimal grain and knots. That being said, I have used pine, cedar, poplar and oak among others. Oak, of course, is a very hard wood and a VERY slow process to burn. It is also very demanding on my tools, often having heat settings on high to burn, which is not recommended for long periods of time, to reduce wear on the pens.
What size boxes to you offer ?
Currently I use one size in particular. It is an unfinished wood box with dimension of : 8.3” (L) x 5.2” (W) x 3.5” (H). They are lightweight, yet very sturdy. The top is double hinged and has a front clasp to keep closed. Made of Paulownia wood.
What size are your basswood plaques ?
Basswood plaques can vary slightly in size. I typically use either the medium or large plaque. Currently I have the Large plaques in stock.
Medium plaque dimensions 8”-10”x 13”x 0.5”
Large plaque dimensions 10”-12” x 16” x 0.5”
*these are averages and can vary slightly*
I have a specific logo/design that i would like burned, can you do it ?
I would love to take a look at it ! If you can send an image that you would like, I can let you know for sure. I have only had a few instances where the image would not translate well to a woodburned image, but for the most part, there should be no issues.
What type of wood finish do you use to protect the burned design ?
I use a very flexible product from Minwax called Polycrylic. It is a waterbased clear gloss finish that is low odor, and dries fast. It also cleans up easily with soap and water. In the early years I would use minwax polyurethane. This was an oil based product and had very strong odor, so I was not able to use indoors and had a very long dry time.
I would love to learn how to do pyrography, any tips ?
I have a lot of tips for beginning pyrography. In order to answer this question, I believe I will need to make a blog.
